Here Steve sifts the dirt he has taken by force (using a pickax) from the roots of a palm tree stump.

First plucking stems and tiny tree branches from the mix, he next presses what’s left through the strainer. Only small stones remain, which he discards, because they don’t match the existing stone bed.

This is a finished batch of sifted earth, and I notice that there are very tiny stones mixed in with the dirt. Steve says that this stony earth will allow water to drain down to the plant roots.

Steve has used a load of stony dirt to build a rim inside this circle of cement blocks. The inner circle around the plant he will fill with sand, making this area easier to weed. Shifting our resources is a major part of Steve’s overall plan.
