In a Still Small Voice You Spoke

The mockingbird sings its song
It breaks the morning breeze
It wakes the sleeping trees

Another voice sweeter still

Moves upon the waters
The voice of the LORD

The voice of the LORD thunders

It breaks the cedar trees
Divides the flames of fire
And shakes the wilderness
His voice alone commands
The winds to cease

I listened for your voice LORD

I waited for you to speak
To me – Did you shout –
Did you call me out –
Did you break my eardrum –
You whispered

In a still small voice you spoke –
To me – Obey me Child –
You said – Love me with all
Your heart and your neighbor
As yourself – I said – Is that
All there is

Lean on me – You said – Alone
You cannot prevail – you’ll fail
I spoke back – I fail a lot –
Do not turn back – You said
Stay near and listen close
To me

Psalm 29 – The Bible (KJV) – Give unto the LORD, O you mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders: the LORD is upon many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; yea, the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn. The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the hinds to calve, and discovers the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory. The LORD sits upon the flood; yea, the LORD sits King for ever. The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

Mark 4:38-41 – The Bible (KJV) – And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, what manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

1 King 19:11-13 – The Bible (KJV) – And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, what doest thou here, Elijah?

Mark 12:29-31 – The Bible (KJV) – And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

I used to shudder at thunderstorms, but the more I read the Bible and learned how His voice thunders, figured I’d better “fear not” and get used to the sound. 🙂 Thank you for your beautiful words, and His.

    • Thank you for stopping by and leaving me a comment, Patti. When I hear thunder, my heart skips with excitement. It’s not that I like a storm, but when I hear that rumble and roar, I feel like God is announcing that He is still on His throne and in control of the universe. Run, Evil one, run! God is here! Okay, I’m probably a little nuts. 🙂 Blessings to you, Patti…

Thank you for sharing this morning Carol. Oh how I need to make room for listening for the small still voice of God that is trying to speak to me through all the noise and chaos in my world.

Each day His mercies are new as well as the words He has for me to hear.

Blessings to you dear friend, Jeanne

    • Thank you, Jeanne. I appreciate your sweet comment. His mercies are new every morning. This is one of the most precious promises we have. Morning always seems to cheer me. There are mockingbirds in this area now. Last year I heard none. I began my morning outside on a bench with my cup of coffee, listening to their beautiful songs. Blessings to you…

Beautiful words Carol – alas, it is often difficult to hear that ‘still small voice’ in the noise of today’s world. Thanks for the reminder to slow down and take heed though.

Blessings to you my friend xx

    • I agree, Chloe. It is difficult to listen for His voice amid the clamor of the world around us. Yet, we are drawn always to His heart of love for us. We want to hear. Blessings to you…

I agree with Chloe – God is so powerful, but his voice is sometimes difficult to hear. This was such a beautiful poem. I read it several times 🙂

    • Thank you for stopping by and for your comment. I sympathize with you and Chloe. I, too, am learning to listen for His voice. The Holy Spirit never speaks anything that contradicts the Word of God. But sometimes we come to crossroads where two ways seem equally acceptable. I am asking God to show me how to listen better, how to recognize His voice and His guidance. I would prefer a note from Heaven with distinct instructions, but I am learning to sense His leading, and it excites me. We never stop learning. Blessings to you, Janna…

I love that first verse because I love to hear the mockingbirds sing.
At times when my son calls from Austin he is outside and the mocking
birds are having what can only be described as a concert 🙂

I also love the verses on the voice of the Lord. It is such a precious gift.

    • I, too, love to hear the mockingbirds sing. I was first introduced to them in Florida. When I arrived at our new place in Texas, there were no mockingbirds singing in the morning. My brother told me that Texas is full of them. This spring the sweet song of the mockingbird is mine to hear again! As you described it, they perform in concert. Blessings to you, Elizabeth…
