Why LORD why
Am I prone to wander
Why do I endlessly stray
Why does the whistling wind
Cause me to lose my way
Why when you’ve
Cuddled me near your heart
Shattered the shackles that held me
Should not the charms of such passion
Fasten me to my God
Why would you
Call me until I hear you when
You knew I’d stray away
You are God and I but dust
You could forget me but you won’t
Although I
Stumble weaken falter
You forever rescue me
You hush the whistling wind
And set me straight again

Yes, we do stray from our place of confidence in God. I always think I’ll be perfectly fixed and immovable forever. Some stupid thought will cross my mind, and I’ll become bewildered and befuddled again. Beautiful poem! The “whistling wind” is a perfect description of the things that distract us from God because at the end of the day all we have is a fistful of emptiness if we’re not holding God’s hand! 🙂

This is a question I too ask myself, why do we stray even after surrendering ourselves to God, is that because the surrender is not complete? we hold back some thing?

I’ll do my best to answer your question. We stray for a host of reasons. Our human nature is to go away from God toward personal ownership of ourselves and our possessions. We are easily moved from our place of full surrender. Surrender is an ongoing challenge for us. Also, we are exposed to the trials of life that hurt us and confuse us. We are tempted by the Evil One to doubt the goodness of God. We effortlessly move from our position of trust to one of doubt and fear. If our souls were not kept forever by God, we would have no hope of Heaven. But thanks to God, as believers in Jesus, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, we are secure, and will never be forsaken by God. He will come after us when we stray and call us back to our LORD.

A poem of the heart, beautifully expressed. It’s human nature to ask why we’re prone to wander, blaming other things for making us stray, when it is our own weakness that’s to blame. I love your reminder that God is always there, always willing to rescue us.

I especially like your reference to our prone to wandering due to the whistling winds around us. I often used to feel like an autumn leaf blowing on a whistling wind in life…but now I feel more grounded 😀
