Psalms 91

I love the 91st psalm. When concerns of life weigh on my heart, I turn to this passage. The mercy and faithfulness of our great almighty God comfort me when I read this psalm.

Psalms 91

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

    Thank you Carol for posting this. I also love this passage, especially verses 2-3 and verse 7. Not is it only my favorite passage, but like you, I read it when trouble is near or when I’m smack dab in the middle of it. A wonderful and encouraging post.

    • Thank you for visiting and for your comment. I agree that verses 2-3 and 7 are awesome! Verse 15 promises that when we call on Him, He will answer us and be with us in trouble. This make me think of the three Hebrew young men thrown in the burning fiery furnace. That was trouble! Jesus was in there with them and they were not burned nor did they come out smelling like smoke. Ha! I get excited. I love your blog and your poetry is beautiful. I love the one about being made for battle. I will visit again and look into your archives.

  2. Is it possible to trust and have doubt? Trust that God is showing you something but doubt that the message can be seen. I asked God, in confusion and pain, to show me something that I can understand. And here I am. On your page. Reading this psalm. And I will continue to read it because August has been my month of question and hardship. I made two lists the other day, one of all the hardships followed by one with all the blessings. I believe you can’t have one without the other and in choosing to see the bad I must always choose to see the good. Your post has allowed me to see God in a way I was reluctant to see him before. Verse 14 holds my heart. Thank you for this post.

    • I believe you are right that God sent you here to show you that he hears you when you call on Him. When a person experiences trouble and feels overwhelmed, this is one of the best Psalms to show us how God to protects us and stands with us in trouble. Chapter15 says “He (She) shall call upon me, and I will answer him (her): I will be with him (her) in trouble; I will deliver him (her), and honor him (her).” I love Chapter 14, too. It is precious. Thank you for stopping in and sharing your experience. Blessings to you. Troubles have their season. They are not permanent. 🙂

    • I’m doing fine. You are very kind to show concern. I am about to read your post for today. I usually see it on my iPhone in the morning. I think I wrote my brother an email and then went back to our apartment to make breakfast today. Blessings to you and your husband and your Suburban Unicorn. 🙂 I can’t wait to read it. I would be glad to send a snippet of mine to you via email. I know yours is still WIP, but when your are ready, I would love to see a snippet. I wouldn’t want you to have seen mine before the finished product, although, at each stage along the way, I thought it was finished. Duh. Maybe it still isn’t.
