1 Corinthians 13:1-7 – The Bible (New Living Translation) – If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

This passage sets a high standard. None of us achieve it all of the time, and then, only through the power of the Holy Spirit. When we read these words, we know the message is right, and we strive to offer such kindness to others. I often fall short, but Jesus never does. He always loves us perfectly.

Ah, my friend, yes, it would be a better place. We aspire to such heights of sweet behavior, don’t we? Yet, we often fail. I like what 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV) says: Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Yes, how wonderful if we could just get it. Yet we all fall short of this beautiful standard of pure love. We know it’s true and right, and we strive to achieve it. May we rejoice in knowing that Jesus has loved us with a perfect love, and has provided at Calvary the way of forgiveness for all our shortcomings.

This is one of my favorite passages, too, Laura. Love sweet love – godly love that bestows upon the unlovely compassion that comes from a heart touched by grace. Jesus gives this kind of unfailing love out of His pure heart. We must allow Him to give it to others through us.

I used the New Living Translation. I think the “not irritable” part would correspond to the NIV saying: “not easily angered”. Either way, we are vulnerable. Our heating-up temperature after years of experiencing grace may lower a few degrees, but we all have our point at which irritability begins to show. Praises to God that His love is always pure. When He becomes angry, it’s righteous anger. Yikes. Often ours is prideful anger expressed when we don’t get our own way or when someone steps on our tender toes.

The Way of Love
1 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. 3-7If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
