Something Old and Something New

LORD You created the Universe on
The first page of the Old Testament
In Genesis Chapter One


In Genesis Chapter Two
You made Adam and Eve
And the Garden of Eden –

In Genesis Chapter Three
The Serpent got in the tree
Eve sinned and Adam too
But You knew what to do
To bring them back to you

A covering you made of
Animal skin – yes –
Animal SKIN

Bloodshed began that day
A sacrifice was made
Blood was spilled to pay

LORD knowing all – as You do – You knew
That people would not be true to you
You’ve always hated sin

You HATED sin – and sinners
Must die – but no – not so –
You had a plan to save man
You knew You’d send Your
Son to carry the awful load

The load of sin of the entire world
Jesus Your Son would take away
His courageous death would make a way
For sinful people to receive forgiveness
By trusting His work on the cross for them

Old Testament saints had no idea
What Jesus would do for them in love
They only knew that one must die
For them to live free of penalty
One sheep one pigeon one turtledove

Each load of sin would trickle in
Each death would match a batch of sin
Imputed to God’s ledger sheet
Until the day Christ would come
To offer payment in full for all

Sacrifices oft were made for sin
At times appointed throughout the years
Old Testament saints knew they were safe
Washed in the blood that was shed for them
What they didn’t know was how it worked

The law could point a sinner out
But the law could not forgive
Only sacrifice could settle a score
Only bloodshed could open the door
And set the sinner forever free

In the fullness of time Jesus came
New Testament times began and
Jesus died on the cross to wipe the
Ledger clean – shedding his Holy blood –
One time One sacrifice One Lamb

Lamb of God how brave you were
You bore our sins – not only theirs –
Foreknowledge put our sins upon
The ledger along with all of theirs
You paid One price for all of us

Now in the New we know it’s You –
Jesus Christ – blood sacrifice
Your work on the cross sets us free
Something Old and something New

Genesis 1:1 – The Bible – In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 2:7-8 – The Bible – And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Genesis 3:1-4 – The Bible – Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Genesis 3:21 – The Bible – Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Genesis 4:4 – The Bible – And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

Exodus 20:24 – An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

Hebrews 10:4-14 – The Bible – For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
