Only Yesterday

Two young girls smiling
Grandfather eating fish
One whole fish staring back at him
Grandmother with her steak
Cooked way too much
Laughing together
Enjoying restaurant food
My sister with her steak well done
And I with mine cooked rare
Excited about the movie next
With buttered popcorn to share

Pass the salt and pepper please
Grandpa how can you eat that fish

It might swim off the plate says he
And bite you on the chin for me
It happened so many years ago
Yet it seems like only yesterday

I’m so glad that you had a chance to go back and spend time with your grandparents. I remember some wonderful meals with my grandparents ~ both sets. It didn’t matter whether we ate in their homes, or went on picnics, or had the occasional meal out in restaurants . . . being with them was always a GRAND experience. Thanks for the reminder of many a marvelous meal.

Lovely memory captured. Very fluid. You have me thinking of my own grandparents who would let the barn kittens in the house while the grandkids were over. Once, my grandma made me spaghetti-ohs because my grandpa had bought a dozen cans on sale. We disliked them so much, she put the whole pot out for the cats to eat instead! Huh, strange memory to recall, but a happy one. Thank you for sharing your work.

There are no memories like grandparent memories. 😀 I think that grandparents are the best friends you’ll ever have, hands down. Thanks for sharing this special part of your life.

  5. I knew someone who ate the eyes of the whole fish on their plate so that it couldn’t stare back at them.
    I’m so glad I’m a vegetarian!

    • Very funny! My grandpa didn’t eat the eyes, but he cleaned many fish in his life, so it didn’t bother him if it stared. I was staring at the fish and thinking I could never eat one that way. During my short adventure as a vegetarian, I ate fish. I was not so radical as not to have fish occasionally.

It appears that during the 1000 year reign of the LORD on this earth following the Tribulation, we will be vegetarians. I’m not sure, but the Bible says the lion will eat straw like the ox. I take that as a clue. Blessings to you, Zoe…

Thanks for sharing your memories Carol. I can still picture my grandmother’s hands in her bread dough and the sound of the pan moving as she kneaded the dough.

It was only yesterday that I had my first born, today he is 27. My how he has grown in twenty four hours…

What a lovely memory. thank you for sharing. Blessings to you…and don’t let that fish bite you!

    • Ha! Thank you, Suzi. That fish looked to me like it might bite Grandpa, too. My grandfather was a great cook and knew how to cook for large numbers of people. He prepared many holiday meals for the whole family. He didn’t serve fish. Once in a while he served oyster stew, but not on holidays. Here I am running on and on. Blessings to you and thank you for stopping by…
