Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Trouble sometimes comes
When we least expect it
When we least know
What to do

Like a predator waiting
Or a low-hanging cloud
An unwelcome intruder
In our world is Trouble

Like the ram in the photo
We may have oft’ traversed
Many a cliff or jagged rock
Yet we’d rather not

But if we never had a problem
We’d never get to see
Our awesome God of Troubled Waters
Calm our Troubled Seas

Psalm 46

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

4There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

6The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

8Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.

10Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 11The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Just what I needed to hear. So many times when things are going well I lose focus, but hard times always send me running back to my Savior.

    • This is so true for me, too. I never pray to have some trouble, of course. No way! No one would do that. Yet, trouble finds us, doesn’t it. God is always there to help us. He is faithful, merciful and full of grace for our hearts. Blessings to you…

How true our world is in trouble but then I have to remember who’s world it really is and that helps put things in perspective. I love this part of Psalm 46 “Be still, and know that I am God”.

It is so hard to be still when things are a mess. I tend to run around frantically trying to fix things instead handing things off to God only when I can’t seem to fix things myself. Blessings, Jeanne

    • Thank you for stopping by, Jeanne. I appreciate it very much. I, too, treasure that part of Psalm 46 “Be still, and know that I am God.” I so often hear those words come back to me as I pray with a troubled heart. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Blessings to you, Jeanne.

We also would never grow, never learn, never use our expansive and beautiful creativity. Wonderful poetry Carol!

    • Thank you, Ollin. You are right. We might not fully use our abilities if we were always comfortable and in need of nothing. Confronting trouble helps us grow as well as showing us our need for God. Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate your comment. Blessings to you…

    • Yes, it is. If I didn’t believe this, I’d be terribly afraid of trouble. This is the first truth I remind myself of when trouble comes. God is in control Thank you for your inspiring comment, Laura. Blessings to you…

When God puts an obstacle in front of us, although we may not understand it at the time, it is there to help us grow stronger.

I like to think of this in terms of being presented with a huge boulder – impossible to move. However, as we TRY to move it, we get stronger all the while. Love the words of your poem Carol. Thanks!! xx

    • Thank you for stopping by, Chloe, and for your encouraging comment. God is good and always works to help us grow stronger, as you say in your comment. I like the illustration you use of the huge boulder that causes us to grow as we strain against it. Blessings to you and a Happy New Year…
