Laughing

Does God have a sense of humor? He created us, didn’t he? (This is what the Bible says. I know not everyone believes the creation story, but I do, so I will go on.) I don’t mean to say he had to be laughing when he made us, but God made us in his own image. One might conclude, therefore, that if we are like God, he probably laughs.

What we mortals laugh about at times may be very different from what God would find laughable. God is good, always, and some situations that people find funny would not cause God to laugh. We recognize that any circumstance that grieves the heart of God would not cause him to laugh. When we laugh inappropriately, our fallen nature is in control. Aside from such exceptions, I believe God laughs along with us.

I confess to doing stupid things from time to time. I may notice mid-stupidity and laugh at myself. I always feel the presence of the Lord with me, so I laugh more thinking that God is laughing with me. Of course, this is assuming that my stupidity didn’t harm anyone.

The Bible, Proverbs 17:22 – A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Enjoy:

I don’t know what sweet child this is swinging and laughing. The photo is from Microsoft Galleries.

Here is one funny (stupid) thing I did years ago: I spent a very long time on my hands and knees on the floor in front of the bathroom sink looking for the contact lens for my right eye, which I thought I had dropped. Finally I gave up and decided I would have to wear my glasses. I took the contact lens out of my left eye and found that I had put both the right and the left contacts in one eye, one on top of the other. Duh!

Does anyone have a funny story to tell? I would enjoy laughing with you.

I do believe God has a sense of humor, as does Bill Cosby. Check out my “On the road….” post; it is an example of His humor to me.

While I’m not particularly religious myself, I treasure the idea that God not only has a sense of humor but uses it. I love the idea of a happy, laughing God.

    • Thank you for stopping by and please do visit again. I suppose many people think of God as austere and hard, but this is not true. God is holy and this is the characteristic that we don’t fully understand even when we talk about it. Holiness is what makes God astoundingly different from us, and it is also why God is always good. He is humble, kind, patient, strong, and generous. His intelligence far outstretches the most genius of his creation, so we would have to believe that his sense of humor is quicker and sharper than ours, yet in concert with his holy nature, good, kind… Oh, my engine has started to hum. Here comes a 9-page comment! No, I must stop. Blessings to you…

Haha! Oh yes, I belive God has a sense of humor or at least some kind of variation of it. My funny story is I use to be a child that ran into things. I’ve ran into stop signs, doors, walls, whatever. Not because I’m clumsy, but simply from not paying attention or doing something stupid. One time I was over my cousin’s house in the driveway where a truck was parked. And for whatever unbeknownst, God only knows reason, I told him that I could run towards the truck with my head down and stop before I hit it. Well, needless to say it didn’t work out the way I’d planned and I ran smack dab in the back of the truck, head first. In essence, I ran into a parked car!!! HAHAHAHA! just thinking about it makes me laugh it was so ridiculous in hindsight. So that’s my story. Have a blessed day!!

    • Very funny story, Te’Kia! I can just imagine you charging the back of the truck and then the amazement you must have felt as you realized you’d crashed into it. I hope you were not hurt. I used to work in downtown Toledo. It was lunch hour and I was walking along the sidewalk day dreaming. At the intersection I walked off the curb and nearly crashed into the side of a moving bus. I was startled when I realized what I’d done. No one saw me do it (as far as I know) and I didn’t touch the bus, but almost! Duh! I thanked God for his watch care over me. Now I wonder if he grinned or laughed out loud when it happened.

I like this post about laughing… it is so good for all of us to laugh… it is healing and fun and we all should definitely do more of it. And if we can laugh at ourselves, all the better. I laugh at myself when I get the urge to do silly dances in the kitchen while music is playing… my children laugh at me, too, which makes it even more worthwhile; sometimes they even join me in the dance. What fun!

    • Oh, heartspell, we are alike. I used to turn on music and dance with my children. I would be the leader and they would following me kicking our heels and lifting our hands and dancing all though the house. How silly, but, oh, so much fun! Thank you for sharing that with me. I feel like I just danced with my kids again! Blessings to you…

Carol…one of the best sermons I ever listened to was on God’s sense of humor. The pastor’s stance was that if God did not have a sense of humor, he would not have placed our…um…exit for gas between two great big hams of muscle. God turned us all into walking woopie cushions. I laughed myself off the pew listening

    • Ha! Very funny! And very true! Adam and Eve probably didn’t need plumbing system at all. After the fall we all began to toot our way around the earth. Yup, that does sound like the result of a sense of humor. Blessings to you…

I agree with you Carol Ann, I also think God has a sense of humor. In the most appropriate of fashions, as you said. What an excellent post this is, I just love it!! Because I’ve had so many funny (stupid) moments, I struggle to pick just one from my smorgasbord.

My first married Thanksgiving, I looked forward to cooking my first turkey. I’d already been warned to remove the ‘contents’ from the inside beforehand, so I set out to perform the task. When I realized that only two fingers would fit, going from outside to in, I decided I needed a playtex glove on. Never could I ‘loosen’ the bird up enough to even get close to the contents inside. Ever frustrated, an hour later I call a neighbor over (who was very well-seasoned in turkey cooking) who promptly slammed the turkey upside down on the counter, grabs a knife, pulls back the skin on the legs that was covering up the PLASTIC TIE that held the legs together, and cut the legs apart. Voila… may I present to you, the inside. She looked back at me, then down at the glove – and proceeded to bust out laughing. Needless to say, I didn’t have much of an appetite come time for Thanksgiving dinner.

    • How cute! The days of cooking the first T-Day dinner! Well, you may have felt stupid but at least you remembered to remove the little packet. I forgot to look and shoved the stuffing in on top and cooked it all inside the bird. Ha! We ate the turkey and stuffing and didn’t find the little packet until cleaning off the carcass to put away the leftovers. E M B A R R A S S I N G !!! Thank you for sharing your experience. I am really impressed that you remembered to look. Very astute of you!

I too believe that God has a sense of humour…and I believe that life is about finding and sharing joy.. 😀 One thing I love about laughter is that you apparently use less facial muscles when doing so…as compared to frowning. I also like how laughing can exercise the stomach muscles 😀 Often, laughing is the only exercise I get – lol xx

    • Very interesting benefits of laughter I hadn’t thought of! Ha! I love to laugh and I sure do need exercise. Smiling and laughing encourage a friendlier and healthier looking countenance as lines that appear with age will more artfully decorate the face. Yes, we are encouraged by God to enjoy the blessings He gives us freely. He is such a GOOD GOD!

I definately believe God has a sense of humor. If not, there would be no pleasure in life.

    Funny story: about pregnancy brain.
I had been dispatched to a house that always had custody disputes. It was actually the mother who was the problem. She was demanding that her daughter come over to her house and she shoved some papers in my face. She said, “She’s supposed to be at my house every weekend this month. Her dad is violating the papers by keeping her here.” I got really angry at her and told her that she needed to read the paperwork right because it clearly says the month of July she is to be with her father. I told her to go home and stop wasting my time. She stared back at me with this blank stare. Then she told me it was October. I forgot what month it was. Not only was I off in the month, I was off in the season! I was so embarassed. Thankfully, she forgave me for my attitude and decided to just go home anyways.
