Celebrating Tuesday

Today my dear husband, Johannes Hoel, a Norwegian by birth, a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, asked me out for lunch. This is not an everyday occurrence and I was pleased. We dined at a little Thai restaurant in Dallas, Texas, a quiet, modest, family-owned place about half filled with patrons, which, in my mind, made it a perfect getaway. The ambiance was cozy; the service, welcoming and congenial. The food was delicious.

Johannes ordered a Thai curry with chicken and egg drop soup. I ordered Thai ginger with tofu and a salad. Won Ton is always my favorite Asian soup but it wasn’t offered as a side, so I chose a salad, which was dressed in peanut sauce with an indescribable texture, a special treat I enjoyed immensely. Of course, we tasted one another’s fare.

Ginger sticks were piled high on my plate along with chunks of red and green peppers and mushrooms, slices of onion and other crunchy vegetables, with seared cubes of tofu, all in a sauce that was delightful, with a round scoop of fluffy white rice contrasting with all the bright colors. I shared the ginger sticks with Johannes, a lover of raw or cooked ginger. Yes,
he even likes hot ginger tea. The Thai curry, a greenish spicy sauce made with coconut milk, surrounded a feast of fancy-cut carrots, cabbage and onion slices, and more, with chicken, topped off with a ball of white rice. This tasty dish satisfied the hearty appetite of my husband. We both took great pleasure in our celebration of Tuesday.

    • Thank you for stopping in. Yes, we had a very nice time. It was really special. We don’t go out often and today was a surprise for me. This was not a special occasion, so we said we were celebrating Tuesday.

    • Hi Jane. Thank you for visiting. We both enjoyed it very much. We used to go out at least once a week to a restaurant, but we don’t do it very often now, so this was a treat. Johannes studies his Norwegian Bible and writes his cousin in Norway in their native tongue. I asked him what does “Uff Da” mean. He seemed at a loss for words and said “it’s just something we say”. He repeated it as if to say it means “Uff Da!” Johannes has Alzheimer’s. He has episodes, but nothing serious has ever happened. We had a blessed day. Blessings to you, Jane…

Was it your birthday perhaps? Sounds awesome Carol, I am also a lover of Thai food, we have a cosy little place just around the corner from my house and one of my favourite places to go…situated right on the water and I always feel so peaceful in going there. My favourite…Pad thai- pan fried rice noodles with either chicken or prawns. Johannes is a very well known South African name…one I always loved!! Glad you had such a good day and thanks for sharing with us my friend xxxx Much love xxx

    • Hello Amanda. Thank you for visiting. There was no special occasion and we don’t go out often. It seemed like we should be celebrating, so we celebrated Tuesday. Your special Thai restaurant situated on the water sounds very inviting. Pad Thai with chicken or prawns sounds delicious, too. We like Thai food and, like your Thai restaurant on the water, there is something calming and peaceful about this quiet little place. Johannes is not a common name in the United States, but it is a good name. Thank you for telling me that his name is well known in South Africa. I will share this with Johannes. Blessings to you, Amanda… with much love xxoo

    • Merrilee! Thank you for stopping by. Yes, it was a delicious meal and so precious to share it with my husband. He is so sweet to me. Asian food is not really difficult to prepare, at least when I do it. I make the simple dishes. Ginger and garlic are two of my favorite ingredients. The ginger sticks were a bit extreme, but Johannes ate everyone and enjoyed them.

Carol, to make a long story short, I believe we may be related. My maiden name is Burreson. I was wondering if your husband is a descendant of Lars Burreson Hoel? If so, we are distant cousins. However, relation or not, I am really enjoying your writings. I started with this one – each day can be special if that is what we want. They are all created special by our Lord. You have a true gift of writing and I will be back often to read more. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

    • Hello Faye. Welcome to my blog. I’m still posting in 2012. This is a post from September of 2010. My husband, Johannes, had a massive stroke in mid-2011 and is paralyzed on one side. He also has Alzheimer’s, which became much more serious and advanced after his stroke. He is unable to speak, and cannot remember many things, so I am unable to confirm whether or not one of his ancestors is Lars Burreson Hoel. We have been married for 15 years, and I’ve never heard that name mentioned. His father was Kasper Hoel. I wish I could be more helpful. Thanks for stopping by and for your comment. I’m very pleased that you will be visiting often. Blessings to you, Faye…
